It's Raining, It's Pouring!

December 23, 2008 (Daet, PI): Tuesday morning we got up early and headed to Daet, which is in the Northern part of the Naga mission. Our drive took us through the mountains (in the rain) where there was a change of scenery. We drove some distance without seeing any dwellings along the side of the road and very few people. On occasion we would spot a giant tree like the one in the picture below.

At the church we found the Daet Zone gathered for Zone training and interviews with President Smith.

While President Smith did interviews, we decided to go shopping. Along the way we spotted the one and only traffic light we've seen since we arrived. President Smith told us the traffic light works from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. When I asked why, he said, "Because that's the hours the man who operates it works." I think the traffic light was causing more problems than it solved.

When we pulled up to the shopping center we were surrounded by little boys saying, "Merry Christmas! Give me money!" The windows on the SUV are tinted and the boys in the picture below were trying to see who was inside.

Amy was pretty excited to see that Twilight is even popular in the Philippines.

Sister Smith dropped us off along the road to do a little shopping on our own. It was raining! No, it was POURING! I'm not sure the umbrellas helped much. We found a great little shop with some fun items to purchase.

We also found ourselves in a market similar to the Naga Market. It had all of the same stuff...like flip flops and more flip flops! The deeper we ventured into the market, the narrower and more closed in the aisles became. It became a little too tight for our comfort so we found an exit. When we emerged, the rain had stopped.

Fruit and vegetable stands outside the market
We found this man who was selling jewelry made out of wire. We were rather taken with the designs and had him do our names for us.

While we were waiting for our names to be created with wire, Filipino children gathered around us. We talked with them and asked their names.

We hired a tricee to take us back to the church.
