From Legaspi to Sorsogon

December 18, 2008: After the Zone Conference we left Legaspi and headed south to Sorsogon. The drive was beautiful...
...for the most part. President Smith told us to get our cameras ready because we were coming upon a "Breath Taking" site we wouldn't want to miss. Well, we had a good laugh as we took pictures of the city dump!
There were fields and more fields and more fields and more fields of rice!

And people and people and more people and more people walking on the road.
The area about 10 feet off the main road is considered "public" property and people have their little shack homes built right along the road. They walk in the street, they play in the street, they live in the street...so driving on the street can be a bit of a challenge. Plus, you add the big transportation buses, the Jeepneys and Tricees and Pudjacks and random Caribous wandering down the road and it's quite the traffic jam. Added to the traffic mess is smoke! Just at dusk time the residents will start small fires along the road. They burn their garbage from the day and because everything is so damp all the time, the fires are quite smokey. So, imagine maneuvering through people, vehicles and smoke right at dusk...it's not the best time to be on the roads. My dad, who is sometimes a scary driver on the roads at home is perfectly skilled, capable, and confident on the roads here. With just a tap or two of the horn the road magically clears. There have only been one or two moments when I had to close my eyes and pray! Here's a great shot out the front of the windscreen of all the people on the road.
We arrived in Sorsogon just after 5:00 p.m. Here we are at the entrance to the city. We stopped to take a picture of an "Egg Plant", so more on that later when we post about the Flora and Fauna of the Philippines.
Don't you think this building is funny? There's a rest stop on your way into Sorsogon with this "Crab Shack".

Terri captured the evening sky perfectly in this next photo. This is looking out over the bay in Sorsogon.
