On Our Own - Amazing Race Style

December 18, 2008 (Legaspi, PI): At home it's hard to crawl out of bed before 7:00 am, but here we wake up between 4-5:00 am. It's getting a little old! After a nice breakfast of curried squash and garlic rice (I think Amy had an Omelet), we headed to the church building in Legaspi to attend another Zone Conference.

Legaspi Chapel

President Smith needed a cell phone charger and decided that Amy and I were the only ones that could skip out on the Zone Conference. Our mission was to get on a Jeepney (public transportation), get off at the Pacific Mall, find and purchase a phone charger, and return to the chapel unscathed. When we asked the Elders for directions they were a little sceptical of our abilities to get around on our own, but pointed us in the right direction.

These are Jeepneys

We headed out on our great adventure without a guide and walked to a main road. Amy turned to a couple of girls and said, "Pacific Mall?" and the girls pointed us to a Jeepney that had just pulled up. We boarded the crowded vehicle and handed over 15 p and told the driver we needed to get off at the Pacific Mall. Getting there wasn't all that bad except I didn't really have much of a place to sit, so I squatted most of the way.

The orange building in the middle of the picture below is the Pacific Mall. The church is to the right, but is not shown in this picture.

We wandered through the mall and eventually found a phone charger (though it turned out to be the wrong one). We decided to walk back to the chapel and get some fresh air and exercise even though the Elders told us it was too far.

We made it back to the church in time for lunch.
